The Chehalem Mountains AVA is a single uplifted landmass southwest of Portland in the northern Willamette Valley, extending 20 miles in length and 5 miles in breadth, stretching from southeast to northwest. It includes several discrete spurs, mountains and ridges, such as Ribbon Ridge and Parrett Mountain.
The highest point within the Willamette Valley is the Chehalem Mountains’ Bald Peak (at 1,633 feet) affecting weather for the AVA and for adjoining grape growing hillsides. It is the geography and climate that differentiate this AVA from others.
All three important hillside soil types are represented: basaltic, ocean sedimentary and loess (blown lake bed sediment), the predominant soil on the northern face of the Chehalem Mountains. Within the almost 70,000 acres of this AVA are over 2,600 acres of grapes, grown in over 179 vineyards, and 53 wineries.
The Holocene wines 2020 vintage sites. A moody but beautiful day in the Valley. Looking forward to this vintage...something good has to happen this year, right?
I would not be able to do what I do without these amazing partners. 🙏🙏🙏
It was a long slog for only a weekend away, but the Willamette Valley was worth every hour in the car! Stunning rolling hills topped with immaculate vineyards, lovely little towns, and some of the most exciting domestic wines I’ve tried in a long while! If you’re able (and it’s safe) make the trip for sure! Big thanks to all the amazing producers who hosted us over the weekend, including but not limited to: morgenlongwine linguafrancawines evening_land vidonwine antica_terra arrowandbranch

This week’s tasting Tuesday takes us to adelsheim in the Chehalem Mountains of Oregon. On my recent trip with wineladyoutwest this was our first stop on day one...and it did not disappoint! Paul was our host for the day and I can’t recommend him enough.
(Ask for Paul if you visit!)
We had hoped to try more of their sparkling wines, but they were sold out (not shocked, the brut rosé is killer). Paul pivoted and poured us this amazing side-by-side of single vineyard Pinot Noirs from Boulder Bluff, Grand Oak, & Eola-Amity Hills. The nuanced differences in these three wines is absolutely mind blowing.
If you’re a wine nerd you have to do some Pinot Noir tasting in Willamette - your palate will thank you!...
We do our best to keep things positive around here, but this is our current reality. This photo, taken this morning by our friend wasimofnazareth, shows the growing clouds of ominous smoke behind our newly renovated Gathering Hall. The Chehalem-Bald Peak wildfire, just a few miles south of our farm, started yesterday afternoon and has already burned over 2,000 acres. We are grateful to be safe at home for now with power and water. Our hearts go out to all who have lost homes or been evacuated (fauna included)... what a scary and surreal time. We cannot thank Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue enough for their tireless fight in containing this fire. For locals: we’ve found their Twitter account (@ TVFR) to have the most up to date evacuation information. Sending our most heartfelt prayers of safety to you all. ♥️

A note to friends and family that we are all ok! On Tuesday my parents saw smoke in the woods down the hill. They evacuated immediately and came to stay with us in Portland. The area was listed level 3, so no one was allowed back, and we just watched the news for updates. The Chehalem Mountain fire grew to about 1000 acres, it was so close we were very concerned. We were able to come back yesterday, and miraculously, no homes were lost in this fire! About 5 acres of our property burned- the bordering property saw 18 of 20 burn. We all have deep gratitude for the hard work of tualatin_valley_fire_rescue and oregonforestry for saving our family home. We cannot thank you enough.
While my parents are diligent about fire safety, we never really considered fire a major threat up here. This land is at 1500ft, and is basically in a rain cloud for 8 months a year. It is the soggiest place you can imagine. The fact that it is burning up here should have us all very concerned.
“Willamette Valley and its sub-AVAs”.

Secondly, we have Ribbon Ridge AVA. It began as the southwestern part of Chehalem Mountains but has recently been recognized as a separate AVA. The uniqueness comes from both the shallow layer of uniformly oceanic sedimentary soils called “WillaKenzie” from the nearby Willamette and MacKenzie Rivers at top bedrock sandstone and the protection from weather patterns by the surrounding hills. Consisting of only 3500 acres, with less than 500 acres planted it’s the smallest AVA in the valley. .
.
Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noirs are smooth and supple with excellent balance of spice and elegant floral notes without the more acidic punch from many of its neighbors. Notable producers here are beauxfreres , patriciagreencellars , domainedivio , ayresvineyard , and trisaetum_winery . .
.
Yamhill-Carlton is nestled between the coastal range to the West and the Chehalem Mountains to the Northeast. The AVA is defined by a u-shaped series of hills and the Yamhill River running thru an area of over 60,000 acres with 1,200 acres of vineyards. Sitting in the rain shadow of the coastal range and the well-draining marine sedimentary soils are the keys to the wines. Vines stop shooting here earlier than elsewhere in the valley leaving more time for ripening.
.
.
The wines have silky integrated tannins with dark fruit notes, tobacco and coffee with floral overtones and medium acid. .
.
Notable producers are: kwcellars , willakenzie , wildairecellars and soterwines . .

Fun NBA wine for the playoffs - 2017 Adelsheim Trail Blazers 50th Anniversary Pinot Noir - 10% of all the sales went to the Trail Blazers Covid-19 Reilef Fund. Vintage was the 50th anniversary of their 1977 NBA Championship with the jolly red giant Bill Walton.
Pretty accessible on the pop and pour - spicy stem driven profile with bright sweet baked red fruit leading to a crunchy and crisp finish. Fruit tows the line between getting a touch candied, so best to enjoy at cooler temps to let the acid & stem notes shin a bit more. but it was an enjoyable drink!
💪🏼 Cheers! It’s #nationalwomeninwineday An expression of gratitude to the women shaping the wine industry - and we have #rockstars 🤘🏼

Part 3/4

Dundee Hills AVA abuts Yamhill Carlton to the east and sits just south of Chehalem Mountains. This is the oldest planted area in the Willamette and has almost 2,200 acres of planted vines in the 6,500-acre AVA. Dundee Hills is mainly comprised of Basalt lava flows called “Jory” and starts above the 200 ft elevation line where sedimentary soils are minimal. .
.
Wines are known for rich complexity, bright fruit notes, minerality, and silky tannins. Notable producers include domainedrouhinoregon mareshvineyard depontecellars , domaineserene and sokolblosser . .
.
The McMinnville AVA lies South and West of the Yamhill Carlton, running up the eastern slopes of the Coast Range comprising of over 40,000 acres. The soils, rich but shallow, alluvial and marine sedimentary deposits over a base layer of basalt and cooling effect from winds funneled off the Pacific from the south keep the vineyards cool and dry.
.
.
Long hang times affect fruit maturity and wines show well with rich black fruit notes, spice, and earthy flavors. Small blocks are usually vinified separately and sometimes blended into estate wines depending on desired outcomes. Notable producers here are: brittanvineyards , hylandestates , youngberg_hill and maysarawinery .

Due to the Buckhaven Fire, Ruby Vineyard will be CLOSED today for visits and appointments. If you're planning on visiting the northern Willamette Valley, DON'T! It's too dangerous and the air quality is rapidly deteriorating.
This fire started last night on the mountain that looks down on our vineyard. This morning, our owners, Steve & Flora, had to evacuate their property.
Please pray for the safety of our owners and neighbors who live in this region of the Chehalem Mountains. Insurance can replace property and belongings, but it can never bring back a life.
We will keep you updated to the safety of everyone in our community.

WOW! 💥Ya’ll, harvest has hit us fast and hard over the past 2 weeks. To catch you up, we’ve taken some of our favorite highlights and set them to a super dramatic soundtrack just so you guys can feel the heat! 💪🏼🔥🍷
After the first two weeks of action, here is where we stand by the numbers:
💥 64,158: pounds of grapes we have brought into the winery and processed so far
💥 70,000: pounds of grapes we still have to pick 😩
💥 123: number of beers we’ve crushed 🍺
💥 11: number of Yellowjacket stings we have endured so far 🐝
💥 10: number of vineyards we are working with this year across 7 different AVAs (American viticulture areas)
💥 6: different grape varieties we are working with this year. Can you name them all? 🍇
💥 1: number of injuries on the team after Bryan fell out of a fermenter and sprained his hip. 💀
💥 0: number of times we have cried so far…. A new record for us! Despite the hard ass work, we’re hanging tough and stoked about the quality of the grapes.
The hard work is just getting started. We are taking a much needed break this weekend while rain showers pass through the Willamette Valley, but we’re back at it next week! Cheers you guys!
Fire & Wine 🔥🍷 I don’t know about you guys, but we’ve got a fierce case of Spring Fever over here!! With sunny days in the forecast and work starting up in the vineyard again, we’re getting anxious for longer days and nightly fire and wine sesh’s. Can’t come soon enough!! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

Tart bing cherry, fresh pine, pomegranate juice. Spiced strawberry, crushed coriander seed, cranberry cocktail. Bright lavender and wildflowers, evergreen tree and mint leaf. Soft vibrant fruit blushes with lifted energy, graciously spilling red plum, raspberry preserve, and blood orange with delicious juiciness. Violet and perfumed florals emerge and inject beautiful aromatics bolstered further by clean forest tones and allspice. Notes of iron, turned loam, and earthy spices sing of soil while a light dusting of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg add supplemental charm. Fresh, forward, and refreshing while remaining remarkably interesting and complex; medium in body with mild tannin and elevated acidity. This 2016 "Insieme" Pinot Noir Cuvée by Formaglini Vineyards is a delightful and wonderfully unique single vineyard blend from the Willamette Valley.
.
Sometimes happy accidents result in outstanding wines. This bottling, crafted by Formaglini Vineyards using 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Lagrein sourced from their estate in the Chehalem Mountains, first came into being through one of those instances. A few years ago at harvest owner David de Lancellotti realized his small parcel of Lagrein had not produced enough fruit to bottle on its own, so he chose to co-ferment the grapes with some of his estate's later-ripening clone 828 Pinot Noir. The result was a bright, juicy, delicious red that instantly became a crowd favorite, and has been brought back in small quantities every year ever since. This wine marries tremendous drinkability and balance with complexity and lift, and is as impressive as it is unique. A wonderful micro-production offering by Formaglini that is unlike anything else we've experienced.

Formaglini Vineyards is a micro-boutique producer making spectacular wine from their biodynamic estate vineyard the Chehalem Mountains of Oregon's Willamette Valley. Their wines are simultaneously classic and adventurous - crafted in a style that authentically expresses typicity and Willamette Valley terroir with a unique old world twist. We had the immense pleasure of attending their release party for their 2017 vintage and were thoroughly impressed by the new offerings. These young wines are unquestionably delicious and will continue to improve and develop with age. Keep an eye out for detailed reviews coming soon.

Our front yard! If you're local, feel free to take pictures from your car but we strongly recommend staying out of the field. It is littered with gopher holes (and gopher traps!!!), blackberries, stinging nettles and other poky weeds. Tart Bing cherry, pine needle, rhubarb purée. Barely-ripe black raspberry, ground coriander, fresh cranberry. Exceptionally energetic and expressive wafts of wild strawberry, crushed orange, red plum, and pomegranate radiate with deep yet electric intensity as herbal and natural notes of eucalyptus leaf, mint, forest floor, and foraged mushroom intricately complicate the multidimensional display. A beautiful bouquet of blooming roses, dried lavender, and carnations gradually arise to provide layers of lifted floral perfume further bolstered in aromatics by cardamom, nutmeg, and a range of pronounced yet delicate spices. Hints of iron and tilled soil eventually emerge carrying a thread of intriguing earthiness that plays in harmony with the bevy of high toned and youthful fruit. Excitingly pure, pretty, and fragrant on the nose with a palate that is vibrant and immensely characterful; exhibiting brilliant freshness and transparency while simultaneously remaining remarkably cerebral and complex. Medium in body with elevated yet soft tannin cut by bright acidity. This 2018 "Candide" Nemarniki Vineyard Reserve Pinot Noir by Bells Up Winery is a spellbinding and impressively authentic red from the Chehalem Mountains.
Located in the northern Willamette Valley above the town of Newberg, the Chehalem Mountains is a storied winegrowing appellation that has become famous as a hub for some of Oregon's best Pinot Noir. This bottling, crafted by Bells Up Winery using Pinot Noir sourced from the Nemarniki Vineyard, showcases the exceptional depth, balance, and complexity that has put this small yet exciting region on the map. Though it would surely benefit from a few years of cellaring to fully blossom and hit its highest drinking potential, this wine already bounds from the glass with highly aromatic and energetic red and black fruits enhanced by beautiful minty herbal charm, bright florals, earthy forest tones, and dainty yet delightful spice. It is wonderfully restrained and weightless on the palate yet still completely flavor-packed, and possesses ideal balance to pair perfectly with food. Outstanding.
