Adjacent to the Willamette River, these hills are composed of the Eola Hills, straddling the 45th parallel on the southern end, and the Amity Hills on the northern spur, constituting almost 40,000 acres on which more than 1,300 acres of grapes are planted.
Two of the predominant influences on the characteristics of wines from the Eola-Amity Hills are shallow soils and the Van Duzer Corridor.
The soils of the Eola-Amity Hills contain predominantly volcanic basalt from ancient lava flows, combined with marine sedimentary rocks and/or alluvial deposits, making a generally much shallower and rockier set of well-drained soils which produce small grapes with great concentration.
The Van Duzer Corridor provides a break in the Coast Range that allows cool ocean winds to flow, dropping temperatures dramatically (especially during late summer afternoons), which helps to keep acids firm.
Hello friend! 👋🏼💜 Excited to check in on our juicy purple wild child from the south (Eola-Amity Hills AVA) tonight! Our La Chenaie Vineyard Pinot Noir has zippy acid backed by a lush and textured purple fruit explosion! 🌈🦄 Our most challenging kid in the fermenter, she always stands out and blossoms into one of our favorite wines in the end!

🤓: One thing we LOVE about making Pinot Noir here in the Willamette Valley is that Pinot is so reflective of the specific spot that the grapes are grown. The Willamette Valley - with all its soil types, dramatic terrain, micro climates, and cool weather coming in from the Oregon Coast - is a perfect place to grow and make Pinot Noir with truly unique character. That’s why you’ll find so many single vineyard Pinot Noirs from the WV... like complex people from different backgrounds and upbringings, each Pinot is different from the other with its own individual personality. They can be complicated yet beautiful, and that’s why we love them!✌🏼

One of two new AVA series Pinot's from Ken Wright Cellars, this inaugural release 2019 Eola-Amity AVA Pinot Noir is just wonderful! Inspired by the geological events that influenced the soils. The Eola-Amity AVA is volcanic soil with characteristics of red & blue fruits, lower pH, higher acidity, less tannic with earthy notes. kwcellars --

Coming to you live from the Willamette Valley, starting our journey at Lingua Franca winery in the Eola-Amity Hills. Lingua Franca, meaning “universal language”, is the project of Master Sommelier Larry Stone and winemaker Thomas Savre. Tasting through this lineup, the word that kept coming mind was “tension”, balancing at the razor’s edge: they were uplifting yet subtle, fresh yet complex, bright yet deep. The Pinots are laced with lots of lovely red fruits and spices and brambly herbs, true to the character of the valley. Of the Pinots, I am most enjoying the 2017s; whereas the 18s are muscular, the 17s are pretty. Savre, who hails from Burgundy (the spiritual homeland of Pinot) purportedly commented “2017 tastes like home”—silky, elegant, beautiful.

We’re almost sold out of our 2017 Roserock Zéphirine. Nick Stock, writing for JamesSuckling.com, gave the wine an extraordinary 96 points, calling it "deceptively elegant and convincingly excellent pinot noir." This stunning wine will soon be gone, so now is a good time to grab a few more bottles! #linkinbio...
Eola-Amity hills is an incredibly diverse AVA in Oregon that produces some the most delicious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the state/country/(world debatably?). These two exemplary wines from lumoswine and walterscottwines represent some of the finest work being done there. It’s hard to pick when there are so many great producers. What do you guys think? Big fans of Oregon wines? Any favorite producers from Eola-Amity or elsewhere in the valley/state? Think we’re all living in a plane on fire that’s rapidly yet not-quickly-enough rocketing towards the Mariana Trench where we’ll crash and have no escape or hope of being found? Comment below!...

Wow, what a treat to try these gems today! A friend and fan from Texas brought Ken two perfectly cellared Pinots from Ken’s 1994 vintage; a 1994 Carter Vineyard Pinot Noir from eolaamityhillsava and a 1994 Abbey Heights Vineyard Pinot Noir, now known as Guadalupe Vineyard.
Over 26 years in bottle and both these wines are showing incredible! A true testament to the ageability of Willamette Valley Pinot noir.
First morning pick at Cortell Rose for sunbreakwc … beautiful sunrise over Mt Hood. This Wadenswil will be made into a white Pinot. Here we are looking at the flower buds on the rachis (stem) of what will be the grape cluster later on. This cluster has had a long life as it started forming in the dormant bud last year along with the shoot primordia. Across the valley, We already lost a lot of primary buds containing the clusters to the frost event back in April. Now we really need Junuary to be over it to escape this “June gloom” into June bloom! We need some sunny days to have good fruitset in grapes. Why? Not because grapes are pollinated by honey bees….. grapes are self pollinated. Native grapes can have the male flower parts on different flowers but grapes that have been domesticated for thousands of years are dioecious meaning each flower contains both male and female parts (see diagram- the stigma is the female part and the stamen with pollen grains is the male part. So back to the question of why we need some warm days….. the male pollen lands on the stigma and grows a pollen tube info the stigma to fertilize the ovules (after fertilization these form seeds). How fast the pollen tube grows is a time temperature dependent process so it needs warm temperatures to complete the process of fertilization. Once the ovule is fertilized, a seed produces hormones to start the process of rapid growth for that grape berry. If the seeds don’t get fertilized the flowers or small grapes will abort. Typiically, in the Willamette Valley for Pinot noir, we see 30-50 percent fruitset meaning on about half of the flowers actually turned into berries. Other crops, such as blueberries pollinated by honeybees can have around 80 percent fruitset. The numbers of berries that are fertilized in the cluster will be the major factor determine size and ultimately yield. So crossing my fingers for some sunny days ahead! 🌞🌞🌞🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🌞🌞🌞 vitis.terra #vtvs #vitisterra #winegrowing eolaamityhillsava #eolaamityhillsava #eolaamityhills #oregonpinotnoir #oregonchardonnay #flowerpollination #grapeflowers #vineyardmanagement #bloom #oregonwine...
