About
The Van Duzer Corridor is an anomaly in the Coast Range through which oceanic winds funnel into the Valley, creating a cooling effect that occurs as early as 2:00 in the afternoon. This breeze dries out the vine canopy and decreases fungus pressure, making the area highly attractive for grape growing and supporting sustainable practices by drastically reducing the need for fungus spray. As a phenomenon of wind protection, the grape skins thicken, leading to an abundance of anthocyanins (color) and tannin.
The buffering effect is highly noticeable and varies from one vintage to another. When nearby regions of the Willamette Valley face overly warm conditions, this area is usually slightly cooler. The opposite is also true; when the nearby regions of the Willamette Valley face below-average temperatures during the growing season, this area receives generous mild air from the ocean, tempering the cold. These combined effects allow for near-perfect growing conditions with highly consistent quality.
Within the 35.9 square mile triangle that composes the Van Duzer Corridor, nearly 1,000 acres are occupied by 18 commercial vineyards and 6 bonded wineries.

The amazing crew from Vitis Terra, our vineyard management team, is winter pruning this week. Almost all of last year’s vine growth is removed, leaving two new fruiting canes to be tipped and tied down to the fruiting wire. Today we also did a sensory analysis of the Gamay Noir grapes we sampled from Havlin Vineyard (#vanduzercorridorava) this week. Brix were right at 20 degrees. This site has a way to go. The grapes did not pick up smoke taint (thank God!) but now we deal with rainfall. Every year that this site sees rainfall before the sugars properly accumulate for red wine production, I let the fruit hang! There will be beautiful sunshine on the other side of this rain event and that means flavors can continue to develop and the berries can fully ripen! It needs a couple weeks still! The juice squeezed for this sample tastes like strawberry/watermelon Jolly Rancher. When the juice matures and starts tasting more like Cherry Jolly Rancher it’s time to pick! That might sound silly, but those descriptors relate to sugar/acid balance and accumulation of flavors. Keep in mind - when you make winemaking decisions based on the vintage and the site as I do - you know this: you can add sugar, you can add acid, but you cannot add flavor. I let the fruit hang as long as it takes to fully accumulate the luscious and amazing flavors that can best be expressed in my finished wine.
